Pidgin a new generation chat client

Pidgin is a chat program which lets you log in to accounts on multiple chat networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on MSN, talking to a friend on Google Talk, and sitting in a Yahoo chat room all at the same time.

Pidgin runs on Windows, Linux, and other UNIX operating systems. Looking for Pidgin for OS X? Try Adium!

Pidgin is compatible with the following chat networks out of the box: AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MySpaceIM, and Zephyr. It can support many more with plugins.

Pidgin supports many features of these chat networks, such as file transfers, away messages, buddy icons, custom smilies, and typing notifications. Numerous plugins also extend Pidgin's functionality above and beyond the standard features.

Pidgin is free to download. Download Pidgin

Google to help measure your internet connection soon

Google has co-launched its M-LAB equipped tool that will help you in finding out problems with your internet connection. By using one of the tools, you will generate and save some data back-and-forth with an M-Lab server. The tools collect data related to the particular communication "flows" generated by the tool. These client-server tests do not collect information about your other Internet traffic such as your emails, Web searches or any personally identifiable information, unless you affirmatively provide it in response to a specific request (such as a form that asks you to provide your email address as well).

Other programs like DiffProbe are expected to arrive in the future. It will determine if your internet service provider is giving lower priority to some traffic in comparison to other.

Open Technology Institute and the PlanetLab Consortium are two other founders of the Lab. For advancing the internet research, all the data collected through the M-Lab will be publicly accessible on servers that are currently provided by Google.

This is at least a partly created initiative to deal with the net neutrality issues for providing better transparency to users. Although the step is more likely supporting the political interest of Google, but it will be interesting to see if same transparency is provided with issues like Google’s censorship in China, Germany and other countries. A measurement Lab tool will register the domains censored in Google.cn, and will collect those into the public database for the research work.

How To Protect Your Pen Drive From Virus?

A majority of systems get infected by Pen Drives or USB devices. It is due to the fact that a lot of viruses, like Ravmon Virus, Heap41a worm etc. are not caught by a simple anti virus system. So how will you protect your system against these worms?

Just Follow these simple, yet effective steps:

Connect your Pen Drive or USB drive to your system.

As usual, a pop up window will be displayed on your screen (Similar to the screen shot that is visible here)

  • Just click Cancel (without clicking on the options that are available in front of you).

  • G to Start – Run -Type ‘cmd’.

  • This will open a Command Prompt window in front of you.

  • Go to My Computer and Check the Drive letter of the USB Drive (E.g. Kingston (G:), then G: is your drive letter).

  • Now go back to the Command Window, and type the drive letter.

  • Now Press Enter.

  • Type dir/w/o/a/p and Press Enter Again.

You will get a list of files. Check if the following options are there in the list or not.

  • Autorun.inf

  • Bha.vbs

  • New Folder.exe

  • Iexplore.vbs

  • Info.exe

  • New_Folder.exe

  • Ravmon.exe

  • RVHost.exe or any other files with .exe extension

If yes, then run the command attrib -h -r -s -a *.* and press Enter.

The next step would be to delete every file that is in the list by using the following Command del filename. ( E.g del autorun.inf ). It’s Over. Now scan your Pen drive with Anti Virus.
